Certified Flight Instructor-Instrument (CFII)
Teach IFR Flying
The CFII adds instrument instruction privileges to your CFI certificate. It lets you teach students to fly in the clouds, log additional instruction time, and work with the highest-demand rating in general aviation training.

What Training Looks Like
CFII training focuses on how to teach the instrument environment, not just how to fly in it. Here’s the path from CFI to instrument instructor.
INSTRUMENT INSTRUCTION THEORY
Learn to teach IFR concepts from the ground up, developing a student’s instrument scan, introducing approach procedures progressively, and building confidence before moving to actual IMC.
APPROACH BRIEFINGS & PLATE READING
Teach students to read and brief approach plates accurately under workload. You’ll develop a systematic briefing method and the communication skills to pass it on clearly under pressure.
ATD & SIMULATOR INSTRUCTION
Approved Training Devices are a powerful and cost-effective teaching tool. You’ll learn to set up realistic scenarios, debrief effectively, and credit sim time appropriately toward student requirements.
WEATHER & RISK MANAGEMENT
Teaching go/no-go decision making is one of the hardest parts of instrument instruction. You’ll learn to frame weather risk in ways that students can understand, internalize, and apply independently.
IFR EMERGENCY INSTRUCTION
Lost comm, vacuum failure, unexpected icing: you’ll learn to safely set up and debrief emergency scenarios that prepare students for the unexpected without putting either pilot at risk
CHECKRIDE PREP & PRACTICAL TEST
The CFII practical test evaluates your ability to teach instrument procedures. The examiner acts as your student, and your instructor will run you through mock checkride scenarios before the real thing.
FAA REQUIREMENTS

Must hold an Instrument Rating (required for CFI, so you already have this).
INSTRUMENT PROFICIENCY
Must demonstrate proficiency in instrument flight procedures and teaching methods.
KNOWLEDGE TEST
Must pass the Instrument Flight Instructor (IGI) written exam, unless recently passed for CFI.
MEDICAL CERTIFICATE
Must hold at least a Third Class Medical Certificate (or BasicMed).
